Milestones

Ta-da! My first 100k on this car! This one came faster than the first one on my last car. This car is a 2004 model. Kinda scary. I put 350k on my last car, guess I like to hang on to them. I had that car for 17 years! and probably would have kept right on going if I hadn't hit a deer... it didn't kill the car outright (tho it did the deer, alas), but it definitely was a lot less happy after that. So here's hoping there are no deer out there with this car's name on them!

We buy used and drive at least a decade, but have never reached 200K. So do tell: what kind of car do you drive?

Hi Michelle - the car is a Prius - darn good thing it gets good mileage with all the miles it does! This winter I'm averaging 47 mpg per tank of gas. Summertime I can get 52! It helps.

So what was the last car - the one you put 350K on?

The last car was also a Toyota - a Corolla (manual transmission, nothing in the way of bells or whistles). It was a great car! VERY little ever went wrong with it, and it just purred along. The car before that one was not so good - it was a Renault Le Car that conked out after a mere 2 years. Cute car, fun to drive, but highly disposable. No thanks! I'll stick with Toyotas I think, as long as they're gonna last!

In our married life we've always had Toyotas and Hondas (except for a brief and forgettable relationship we had with a Buick that we got from my dad) and had very good experiences with both. After reading about "hypermilers" in Reader's Digest, I want to go back to a manual (always liked them anyway). Did you know that the cars that "hypermilers" have gotten the highest gas mileage with were NOT hybrids (it WAS a Toyota - 180 mpg)?!? It is all in how you drive them, which I'm trying to be more conscientious about.

It is BLIZZARDING outside our windows at the moment. A half hour ago, I was shaking rugs over the railing of our deck in the warm sunshine. This weather is CRAZY!
